Essential RV Supplies for Beginners
December 6th, 2019Hitting the road in your RV is always exciting, but it’s even more thrilling when it’s your first time. However, as with anything, it’s common to make mistakes during your first RV trip. There’s bound to be a wrong turn, some bad parking, or a failed recipe somewhere along the road. Fortunately, you can minimize damage by making sure you stock your RV with everything you need for a safe and successful trip. Make your first trip unforgettable and enjoyable with these essential RV supplies for beginners.
Tire Pressure Gauge
The last thing you want is to spend part of your vacation broken down on the side of the road. Tires are an essential part of vehicle maintenance, so be sure to pack a tire pressure measuring system. Every time you set off, make sure your tires are filled to the appropriate PSI so you can avoid any problems down the road.
Toilet Paper
The most basic essentials are often the easiest ones to forget. Be sure to stock up on toilet paper before you go. Pay attention to the type you’re buying as well. Septic-safe or RV specific toilet paper will help you avoid any unwanted problems in your black tank system.
Tank Treatment
Managing your vehicle’s plumbing system is one of the first things to learn as a new RV owner. Help yourself out by buying a black tank treatment ahead of time. This can make dumping your tanks easier by preventing clogs and bad smells. There are plenty of different treatments out there, so you can find one that’s friendly to your RV, the environment, and your wallet.
Surge Protectors and Extension Cords
Electricity can be a tricky thing when you’re in the outdoors, and the regular extension cords you use in your house aren’t going to cut it. Be safe and prepared by having a surge protector and an RV power cord on hand. Pay attention to the amperage rating you need. It’s also a good idea to check out the campsites you’ll be staying at, so you know what sort of hookups you’ll be working with ahead of time.
Freshwater Hose
It’s always good to have a hose dedicated solely to your freshwater tank. Your water hookup might be a ways from where you park, so make sure your hose is long enough to reach. Label it as a freshwater hose or make sure it’s a different color than your other hoses. You should also check that your hose is lead-free, since you’ll be using it for drinking water.
Water Filter
You never know where your water supply is going to come from, so a water filter is always a good idea. A water filter system is invaluable when it comes to showering and doing the dishes. Plus, when you drink water through your RV, you don’t have to keep spending money on single-use water bottles.
Jumper Cables
While not all vehicle problems are avoidable, you can save yourself a lot of hassle with a pair of jumper cables on hand. Not only will it be a big help if your RV’s battery dies, but you’ll also be able to help a fellow traveler out of their own sticky situation. That’s why jumper cables are one of the most essential RV supplies for beginners.
Awning Tent
The right accessories can work wonders for your RV. An RV awning tent increases your RV’s living spaces and gives you more room to stretch out and enjoy your campground. It’s also great for keeping out bugs, rain, or other less-than-ideal conditions or contaminants.
Radio
A battery-powered radio is a camping essential. Keep an ear out for weather reports, especially if you’re RVing in colder spots. You can also set it on a good local station for some music or other entertainment. Radio shows can be the perfect addition to a relaxing night by the fire.
Hand-Held Vacuum
Your RV isn’t going to be perfectly clean when you’re on the road, but there are ways to keep it tidy and therefore a much nicer place to spend time. Investing in a hand-held vacuum can be a lifesaver when it comes to cleaning up your RV’s interior. From dirty footprints on the carpet to dust or crumbs in the kitchen’s corners, a quick lap with a vacuum is a quick way to make your RV look nice and clean again.
Spare Batteries
With so much of our supplies now running on electric cords or chargers, it can be easy to forget to pack the batteries. Check your flashlights, radio, and anything else that uses batteries to make sure they’re still in good condition. Stock up on extra batteries just in case, and keep an eye on your supplies every time you head out on a new adventure.
Dish Set
You probably don’t have a lot of kitchen space in your RV, but a small set of dishes can go a long way. Make sure you have one or two pans that are multi-purpose, durable, and easy-to-clean. Dishes may seem like a hassle—especially in an RV-sized sink—but a dining set can save you from constantly spending money on paper plates and silverware. Don’t forget the utensils, either. From a cutting board to a can opener, you’ll be grateful you have all the basics on hand.
First Aid Kit
As with any trip, it’s a good idea to have a basic first aid kit on hand. If you get scratched up while hiking or your hands slip while lighting a fire, you can patch yourself up with no worries. Check your first aid kit before you leave to make sure you’re still stocked up on bandages, itch cream, antibiotic ointment, and other supplies.
Hamper
Space is tight in your RV, which means you want the interior to stay as clutter-free as possible. While an extra suitcase or a trash bag can work for dirty clothes, it’s also a good idea to invest in a hamper. A foldable or net bag hamper is perfect for tossing dirty clothes, and you can easily store it away when you’re not using it.
Levelers
When you park, you want your RV to be on level ground. Unfortunately, that isn’t always a possibility—which is where levelers come in handy. Keeping your RV level when parked will help prevent damage to appliances and keep you much more comfortable when you’re spending time inside.
